1995 New Urbanism Study

The study was fielded in October 1995 and asked recent home buyers and shoppers in California, Texas, Washington, Florida, Colorado, and Michigan how much they liked or disliked certain key design concepts of New Urbanism vs. those found in standard suburbs. The May 15th 1995 NEWSWEEK cover story, "Bye-Bye Suburban Dream" summed up many of these concepts and offered them up as possible solutions to the problems of suburban sprawl and the disintegration of active communities. Do home buyers agree these problems exist? Do they like the alternatives of New Urbanism? These are the questions our study answers.

The concepts tested in the study include such ideas as planning for community gathering places and town centers, density of housing, street patterns, architectural styles, dealing with parking and cars in town, and more. The results were presented at the Annual ULI Conference in Philadelphia in November 1995. The price of this report is $150.

The complete study includes the following:

  • breakdown by market types and how much each type likes or dislikes the design concepts and agrees or disagrees with reactions to them
  • specific responses showing the degree of support of New Urbanism design concepts: what they like and what they don't
  • specific responses showing the degree of satisfaction with the state of current suburban communities: what they want to keep, what they aren't willing to sacrifice, and what they want to change
  • and most importantly, a comparison of these issues and what that means for the development of new communities
